How to Choose Braai and Outdoor Cooking Accessories
Share
A useful braai kit starts with the food you cook, the equipment you use and where you plan to cook. Whether you are preparing a meal in the garden or packing for a camping trip, choose accessories for the jobs you actually need them to do.
Match accessories to your cooking equipment
Before buying a grill plate or cooking accessory, check its dimensions, intended heat source and the manufacturer's compatibility instructions. Do not assume that a plate designed for one cooker can be used over every flame, burner or grill. Check how it is supported and whether your setup provides a stable cooking surface.
Choose utensils for the task
Compare handle length, grip, materials and intended use. Check whether utensils are suitable for hot cooking surfaces or only for preparing and serving food. Keep handles away from flames and use appropriate heat protection as directed.
Check kitchen shears and meat preparation tools
Read the manufacturer's guidance before using shears on bones, frozen ingredients or packaging. For a meat tenderiser, check the preparation and cleaning instructions. Keep sharp tools safely stored and out of children's reach.
Think about portability
For camping, compare packed dimensions and weight rather than judging from photographs. Check exactly which pieces a utensil set includes and whether it has a storage case. Allow equipment to cool completely before packing, following the manufacturer's directions.
Keep raw and cooked food separate
Use clean utensils and serving plates for cooked food, rather than reusing items that held raw meat without washing them. Plan how you will keep perishable ingredients chilled and how you will wash tools and hands at your cooking location.
Use charcoal equipment outdoors only
Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide. Never use a charcoal braai indoors, in a tent, garage, vehicle or other enclosed space, even if a door or window is open. Do not bring equipment containing burning or smouldering charcoal indoors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, keep children away from hot equipment and never leave a lit braai unattended.
Check care requirements before buying
Confirm how each item should be cleaned and dried, which surfaces need special care and whether any parts are dishwasher-safe. Follow the instructions for cooling and cleaning, and inspect tools for damage before use.
Build a kit around your routine
Start with a few tools that suit your meals and existing equipment. Review dimensions, included accessories and compatibility before ordering, and ask about any missing specifications.
